The results of a recent survey in Ireland, in which 1,534 respondents shared their views on social security and welfare topics, provide insights into how the Irish population feels about means testing, government support, and solidarity.
The survey published in October 2024 revealed Irish people want policies focused on fairness and practical support for families and workers.
Nursing home costs should be lowered
The majority of respondents (83%) believe the government should reduce the costs of nursing home care. This points to broad concern about the affordability of caring for our ageing population.
Financial support for families
There is also strong consensus on family support. 78% believe that parents who choose to stay at home to care for their children should receive financial support. Additionally, 77% support setting a maximum fee per child for childcare. These results highlight a strong desire among the Irish for accessible and supported family care—both at home and externally.
Right to flexible work and parental leave
In the employment market, 82% support requiring employers to allow working from home where possible. This shows that the right to flexible work, reinforced by the pandemic experience, has become firmly rooted in the Irish population. Also, 71% support mandatory parental leave for both parents. These results indicate a preference for policies that make balancing work and family life easier.
Make child benefits income-based and cap electricity prices
Opinions on how to fairly distribute social welfare benefits, are a bit more moderate, but still clear: 61% agree that child benefits should be income-based (means-tested).
Finally, 83% of respondents want the government to introduce a capped unit price for electricity—an appeal for protection against rising energy costs and the rising cost of living.
