Irish people want strict but fair law enforcement

The results of a recent survey of 1,534 Irish respondents, sheds light on what the public thinks about legislation, justice, and crime. In general, the figures published in October 2024 show a strong preference for strict law enforcement and greater emphasis on safety.

No early release for life sentences

80% of respondents believe that someone sentenced to life imprisonment should never be released early. This indicates Irish people hold a tough stance on punishment within the justice system. Also notable is that 81% support the use of bodycams with facial recognition by the Gardaí.

End overcrowding in Irish prisons

When it comes to government policy on detention, 84% believe sufficient resources should be allocated to end overcrowding in prisons. This indicates that, alongside a tough stance on crime, there is also support for better conditions within the prison system.

Divided views on cannabis use and penalty points for traffic offenses

Opinions are divided on drug policy: 58% support the legalisation of cannabis for recreational use. This shows that there is room for public debate on the future of drug policy in Ireland.

Finally, public opinion on increasing penalty points for traffic offenses is particularly divided: 52% in favour, 48% against. This indicates that road safety remains a topic without clear consensus.

In summary, the results point to a preference for law enforcement, combined with nuance in specific policy areas such as drugs and traffic.
